Lumps, Bumps & Cysts Treatment in Kerrville, TX
Evaluation and Treatment of Common Skin Growths
There are hundreds of different types of lumps, bumps, and cysts that can develop on the skin. Fortunately, the vast majority of these growths are harmless and painless. However, some skin growths may require evaluation by a dermatologist to determine whether treatment or further testing is needed.
At Precision Dermatology, our board-certified dermatologist provides expert evaluation and treatment for skin growths including cysts, lipomas, dermatofibromas and other benign or suspicious lesions. When necessary, we can perform in-office biopsies or minor surgical procedures to diagnose and treat skin conditions safely and effectively.
We proudly care for patients throughout Kerrville and the Texas Hill Country.
Common Types of Lumps, Bumps & Cysts
Below are several common skin growths that dermatologists frequently evaluate.
Dermatofibromas
Dermatofibromas are firm skin growths that are typically benign. Characteristics include:
-
Red, brown, or purple growths
-
Most commonly found on the arms and legs
-
Feels like a hard lump under the skin
-
May be itchy or tender
-
Sometimes painful when touched
These growths are usually harmless but may be removed if they become irritated or bothersome.
Epidermoid Cysts (Sebaceous Cysts)
Epidermoid cysts are small, round bumps beneath the skin that develop when oil glands become blocked. Common features include:
-
White or yellow round bump
-
Often appear on the face, neck, back, trunk, or genitals
-
Usually benign
-
Can become red, swollen, or tender if infected
-
May produce a thick yellow discharge if squeezed
Although most cysts are harmless, infected or painful cysts may require medical treatment or removal.
Folliculitis
Folliculitis is an inflammation or infection of the hair follicles. Signs may include:
-
Small red pimples around hair follicles
-
Irritated or itchy skin
-
Often occurs in areas affected by shaving, friction, or tight clothing
Folliculitis may develop due to:
-
Bacterial or fungal infections
-
Physical irritation (such as shaving)
-
Chemical irritation from fabrics or skin products
People with diabetes, obesity, or compromised immune systems may experience folliculitis more frequently.
Keratoacanthoma
Keratoacanthomas are rapidly growing dome-shaped bumps that resemble certain types of skin cancer. Typical features include:
-
Red, dome-shaped bump
-
Often has a crater-like center
-
Develops from abnormal hair follicle cells
-
Can be triggered by minor skin injuries or insect bites
Ultraviolet (UV) radiation from sun exposure is the most common risk factor. Because keratoacanthomas can resemble skin cancer, evaluation by a dermatologist is important.
Lipomas
Lipomas are soft fatty tumors beneath the skin. Common characteristics:
-
Soft, movable lump beneath the skin
-
Slow growing
-
Usually painless
-
Often found on the neck, shoulders, or trunk
-
May occur as a single lump or multiple growths
Lipomas are typically benign but may be removed if they become uncomfortable or press on nearby nerves.
Neurofibromas
Neurofibromas are soft growths that develop under the skin. Characteristics may include:
-
Soft, flesh-colored bump
-
Slow growing
-
Usually painless
-
May produce a tingling or electrical sensation when touched
While most neurofibromas are benign, pain or rapid growth should be evaluated by a dermatologist.
Skin Cysts
Skin cysts are closed pockets of tissue that can contain fluid, pus, or other material. Common features include:
-
Smooth lump beneath the skin
-
Feels like a small pea under the surface
-
Can develop anywhere on the body
-
Usually painless and slow growing
Most cysts do not require treatment unless they become infected, inflamed, or cosmetically bothersome.
Diagnosis of Skin Growths
During your appointment, your dermatologist will perform a careful skin examination to determine the nature of the growth.
Diagnosis may include:
-
Visual examination
-
Dermatoscopy (magnified skin evaluation)
-
Skin biopsy, when necessary
-
Removal of the growth for testing or treatment
These procedures are typically performed comfortably in our office.
